- Access to the universal information
The Web provides access to an immense amount of information from all over the world.
I once wanted to buy a birthday gift for my younger brother. However, the idea of spending the whole Saturday noon at different gift store in the cold winter could made me crazy. Don’t worry, web came and save my day! With it, I can browse endless options of gifts on online shops, all while enjoying the heating in my room, soft couch, and a cup of hot cocoa. What’s more, since I’m an indecisive person, can open multiple tabs with different options and compare them side by side.
- Communication becomes much easier
The Web enables people to communicate with each other regardless of their location, making it easier to collaborate and share ideas.
After I went to NYUSH, I live far away from my parents and only get to see them a few times a year. But thanks to the magic of online phone calls, I can stay connected with them no matter where I am. With just a few clicks, I can set up a video call and have a face-to-face conversation with my parents, no matter how many miles separate us. It’s like having a virtual doorway that’s always open, ready for you to step through and catch up with the ones you love.
“ill effects” with personal examples
- Privacy and security risks
The Web can be a source of privacy and security risks, as personal data can be stolen or misused by malicious actors.
I once told my friend that I needed to buy a blanket. After I open Taobao, something weird happened – this app was pushing me the blanket product information like crazy. I was wondering if this app eavesdropped on my chat with my friend.
- Walled gardens: Some companies create “walled gardens” or closed platforms that limit user choice and control over their data.
For example, if you want to share a link to an article from a news website on this social media platform, you may not be able to do so directly. Instead, you may need to copy and paste the link into a new post, which may not display as nicely or be as easy to interact with as a post that was created natively on the platform.
Concepts
Universality means the Web should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or device. Websites and applications should work across platforms and devices.
Isolation means that some companies and platforms may try to keep their content and services separate from the rest of the Web. This can create closed off ecosystems where users are limited to what the platform provides, rather than being able to explore the full breadth of the Web.
Open standards are freely available technical specifications that promote collaboration and interoperability between different technologies and platforms. They prevent monopolies and allow for more competition and innovation.
Closed worlds are platforms or ecosystems that restrict user access and participation, often by keeping their technology proprietary or limiting interoperability with other platforms. This can hinder innovation, competition, and users’ choices.
The Web is a collection of interconnected documents and resources, accessible via the Internet.
The Internet is the network of connected devices that allows us to exchange information and communicate with each other.
Problem and solution
One problem that has arisen since the author’s essay is the spread of fake news and misinformation on the Web. One potential solution to this problem is to promote media literacy and critical thinking skills, so that people are better able to evaluate the credibility of the information they encounter online.
