Dream/Scheme

August 3, 2018 by Editor

Composition for saxophone quartet with woodwind doubling (two flutes, soprano saxophone, and tenor saxophone), found in Music Manuscript Notebook 1 (MMN1). The archive also includes photocopies of the parts in holograph. It was recorded by the World Saxophone Quartet on Steppin’ with the World Saxophone Quartet (1979); on the recording, the tenor saxophone part is played on bass clarinet.

Found on: Steppin’ with the World Saxophone Quartet.

From Marty Ehrlich: This work is intricate and multi sectional, set within a rich, free floating harmonic world. Hemphill writes “A la Grotesque” for a section in which a vamp for soprano saxophone and bass clarinet gradually accelerates over an independent, two-flute part.
