Music Manuscript Notebook 2 (MMN2) contains a score for flute, trumpet, and drums, with the heading “Rollbar.” This appears to be part of a soundtrack composed for the film The Orientation of Sweet Willie Rollbar, which was made by members of the Black Artist Group in St. Louis in 1972. The archive includes multiple audiovisual documents relating to the film.
From Marty Ehrlich: Hemphill conceived Sweet Willie Rollbar with Malinké Elliott in St. Louis in 1971 and recorded a solo woodwind soundtrack for Sweet Willie, though the film was not finished in his lifetime.
The score in MMN2 makes reference to particular sections and timings in the film. For example, Hemphill writes, “cut to The Hard Blues,” perhaps a note to use the recording of “The Hard Blues” from the Dogon A.D. session. There is no evidence that Hemphill had the opportunity to record what is here for the film. (Note that the instrumentation, woodwind, trumpet, and drums, is that of Hemphill’s Janus Company trio, which toured in 1977.)
