This page includes an annotated list of the archival audiovisual documents contained in the Julius Hemphill Papers. Most have been digitized and are available by appointment to researchers visiting at NYU Special Collections & Archives. All works are composed by Julius Hemphill unless otherwise indicated.
Why this list? Typically, archives add no interpretive information to their collection inventories. For example, the finding aid for the tapes in this collection includes only the information that was originally on the tape label, insert or case. This practice is important for research, because it documents the materials exactly as they are, but it also means that poorly labeled audiovisual materials will stay hidden.
Illuminating the hidden archive: This website aims to support researchers and artists who want to make new recordings, performances, editions, and interpretations of Hemphill’s music. Because Hemphill continuously reconfigured his works and incorporated improvisation into their performance, archival tapes are crucial documents of his compositional corpus.
To illuminate this hidden archive, Marty Ehrlich has watched and listened to the entire collection of audiovisual documents, and where possible he has identified compositions, concert dates, and performers, along with approximate timings. (Hemphill rarely announced his compositions from the stage; Ehrlich identified most works through previous knowledge, a comparison with archival score materials, and consulting with Hemphill’s collaborators.) To make it easy to search this information, it is included below on a single web page. To make it easy to find archival score materials, the titles to Hemphill compositions are linked to the corresponding entries in the Annotated Composition List.
For access to a longer document created by Ehrlich with substantial annotations for these materials, please contact NYU Special Collections.
About the Cuids: For ease of navigating the list below and finding the corresponding audiovisual document in the collection, we have included Cuids, unique identifying numbers that are used behind the scenes in the archive. If needed, researchers can use these numbers as an extra identifying measure, in conversation with the archivists.
In addition, to date, a batch of audiovisual material that is part of this collection (or has a close connection to it) is awaiting processing and not yet available for research. These materials have not yet been assigned Cuids. They are listed at the end of this document with the expectation that they will soon be accessible.
Disclaimer: Please note that this is a working site and all the information it contains should be considered preliminary. Researchers may resolve any inconsistencies or discrepancies by consulting the archival materials in the reading room at NYU Special Collections (available by appointment).
