Lapis: The Journal of the Institute of Fine Arts seeks articles for its fifth issue to be published in Spring/Summer 2024.
Lapis is a peer-reviewed, open access journal of art history, architecture, and art conservation published by the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. Lapis is dedicated to scholarly articles on art history from all fields with an emphasis on publications from graduate students and early career scholars internationally. In considering art history as a trans-temporal and interdisciplinary practice tightly linked to material culture, Lapis strives to present studies that are broad in chronological, geographic, and methodological scope.
For its fifth issue, the editors are eager to receive articles on a diverse range of topics and are especially interested in reviewing work on pre-modern and non-Western topics. Focused, object-based papers or case studies of small groups of works are preferred, but surveys and reports will be considered. Art conservation papers must have a focus on visual art analysis.
Articles between 4,000 and 5,000 words by graduate students and scholars within three years of graduation are welcomed.
All submissions must be formatted in .doc or .docx documents and should be double-spaced and in 12-point Times New Roman font. Please include all documents in a single Word Doc. For style and formatting, it is the author’s responsibility to ensure that submitted work corresponds to The Chicago Manual of Style’s guidelines. Note that Lapis cannot accept .pdf submissions.
Lapis practices blind peer-review. Your submitted document should only include author name on the first page. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure all subsequent pages are free of identifying information.
All submissions should include the following items in the following order:
Title page with author’s name, title, institutional affiliation (or year of degree conferral), contact information, and brief biographical statement (maximum 100 words);
Abstract (maximum 350 words);
Article (maximum 5000 words, excluding footnotes);
List of illustrations and captions;
End notes.
Please email submissions to lapis@nyu.edu. Our deadline for priority review will be January 8th, 2024. Work received after January 8th will be reviewed based on the needs of the journal following assessment of initial submissions.
Please note it is the author’s responsibility to be familiar with the journal’s contributor guidelines should your piece be accepted for publication. Lapis publishes all images under fair use, however should rights be necessary, the author is responsible for securing usage rights for any and all images published.
Thank you for trusting us with your scholarship. We look forward to reviewing you work. Should you have any additional questions or queries, please contact lapis@nyu.edu.
Sincerely,
The Editorial Board
