According to the Conndev class, I have a basic idea of IoT. I always consider remote data could be useful resources to apply to the art installation giving the object a sense of motion or the sense of life. And it’s the reason I took the class. Personally, I’m satisfied with my final piece.
In addition, I also want to record my understanding of IoT products.
Nowadays, the methodology of connected devices were applied to most products, especially household commodities. In my home in Wuhan, the fresh air system, the whole house light source, and the door lock are all IoT products. The air system and door lock have their app controller, and the light sources are connected to a voice-controlled robot. Since I live alone, the air system and door lock are super useful for me.
But I never use voice control to turn off or turn on the light, physically triggering the switch is much more simple especially after I finished my work I didn’t have any energy to yell out a command… However, the reason I install the robot is the function for weather forecasting and morning call. That way I don’t need to keep my phone next to my bed. The robot was installed in the living room when the alarm goes off, I have to leave my bed to turn it off. I think its existence has helped me to develop a good routine. The key factor, of course, is that I manually set its physical location.
And my mother like the robot since it is also a speaker. She isn’t familiar with looking for music on various applications, so whenever she says the name of a song she wants to hear, the robot will play it for her, which is a really useful tool for her. This is the main reason she bought it.
There are many similar products that are widespread in households and are inexpensive. Essentially, each company is devoted to transforming this home IoT product into a multi-functional item; the more functionalities, the greater the market value.
However, many devices have obvious user experiences flaws, such as voice control inaccuracy and instruction style rigidity. Even there are always some functions in the scrapped state. As similar products become more common and consumers become more familiar with such products, they will find their specific clear demand points and will want to buy a product that meets their demand points and has an excellent user experience, rather than a crude multi-function device. IoT goods will progress to the next stage of their life cycle.
