W2: Using the VR

I did not use the library’s gear but had gone to my cousin’s place to use his Oculus Rift. I first decided to try out Beat Saber since I play a lot of rhythm games. I could only play for about 15 minutes at a time before my eyes started to sting, surely due to the monitor being very close and honestly somewhat unclear, perhaps since it is a bit older of a model. Although I definitely did not play that well it was certainly an interesting experience, it being the first time I even tried any VR game. Compared to the other game I tried, which was Skyrim VR, I could appreciate the dark backdrop, simple UI, and the stationary nature of the game since it didn’t make me as dizzy as when I was moving around in Skyrim. As for Skyrim, I could not get used to the controls at all, and feeling like walking around without actually walking around honestly gave me motion sickness very quickly. I’m sure that if I had more exposure to using VR I’d get used to it more quickly but since I was feeling a little dizzy already I decided to stop. It was nice though, to feel like I was really walking through another world for that short while but I hope in the future they can change this awkward, half analog-half kinetic interaction to be fully immersive. In the end though, I don’t think I’m particularly interested in using VR all that much, at least for gaming, it requires too much space and time to setup, problems I’m sure will be slowly addressed as time goes on, and my eyes just couldn’t seem to take it all that well, but that’s probably on me, with my eyesight being horrible from years of staring at monitors.
