Case Study II. Data Visualization

Inspiration #1: The Largest Vocabulary In Hip Hop

https://pudding.cool/projects/vocabulary/

In this visualization, Matt Daniels collected the data of the number of unique words used within Artist’s first 35,000 lyrics and made a correspondingly graph. X-axis shows the numbers of words, and each rapper is represented by a small circle with his/her picture in it.

  • Informative

On this graph, people can not only see how many words each artist used, but also compare them together. This is a perfect way to present large amount of data. What’s more, Matt created a search bar so that people can directly find the certain artist they are looking for, which is very convenient and user-friendly.

  • Aesthetic

The overall style of this visualization is black-and-white and clear. These circles are nicely scattered on the graph, I enjoyed very much when looking at it.

Inspiration #2: The Colorism in High Fashion

https://pudding.cool/2019/04/vogue/

The data is collected by Malaika Handa and visualization is coded and designed by Amber Thomas & Jan Diehm. In this picture, the lightness spectrum shows the color of 262 female cover models in the 228 issues of Vogue.

  • Informative

This visualization is similar to the one above. On the x-axis, the left side represents the darker shades and the right side represents the lighter ones. As the graph shown, the general skin color of the models are lighter, with only a few outliers on the left side.

  • Aesthetic

Different from the last one, this visualization incorporates color into the graph and people can directly see the change of color from left to right.
