The Uncertainty of Documentarism – Reading Response

• Steyerl talks about how the “unbroken belief” of the documentary form is challenged. What does Steyerl mean by this?

I think by saying that, Steyerl means that the documentary form, which traditionally claims to represent reality in an objective and truthful way, is challenged by the uncertainty and doubt that pervades the contemporary media landscape. She argues that documentary images are no longer trusted as reliable sources of information, but rather as emotional triggers that appeal to the viewers’ feelings and desires. She also suggests that documentary images are increasingly abstract and indistinct, making it harder to discern what they actually show and hide.

• Certain movies and films are based on a true story.  How does truth inform fiction? How might fiction inform the truth?

Truth and fiction are not mutually exclusive, but rather interrelated and interdependent. Truth can inform fiction by providing factual details, historical context, or realistic scenarios that make fiction more believable and engaging. Fiction can inform truth by offering alternative perspectives, imaginative possibilities, or critical insights that challenge truth’s assumptions and limitations.

• What is the significance of the authenticity and representation of the truth in the media that you consume on a daily basis?

The authenticity and representation of the truth in the media that I consume on a daily basis is very important, but also very difficult to verify. I think that media consumers should be aware of the biases, agendas, and manipulations that may affect the production and distribution of media content, and that they should always question and cross-check the sources and evidence that they encounter. I also think that media consumers should be open to different viewpoints and interpretations, and that they should not accept any media content as the final or definitive truth.

• What is the role of a live broadcast? 

The role of a live broadcast is to create a sense of immediacy, presence, and participation for the viewers, as if they were witnessing the events as they unfold. A live broadcast can also convey a sense of urgency, importance, and authenticity, as it implies that the events are too significant or unpredictable to be edited or delayed. However, a live broadcast can also be misleading, inaccurate, or sensationalized, as it may not have enough time or context to verify or explain the information that it presents. A live broadcast can also be influenced by technical issues, human errors, or external interventions that may affect its quality or integrity.
