Inspiration:
I went diving every summer when I was young and I was in love with the feeling of being immersed in a weightless and tranquil environment. The unusual auditory effect underwater especially left me strong impression. So I’m interested in how can I recreate the sound effects underwater which are totally different from the sounds in our daily lives.
About the plot. I was fascinated by a bedtime story my mother once told me, saying that a man was swallowed by a whale and lived inside it for 3 days, which later I knew is the story of Jonah in the Bible. So I always imagined myself being swallowed during my diving. This soundscape is the combination of my physical and mental feelings when I was diving.
Explanation:
The soundscape can be devided into 3 parts according to different space and audio effects.
The first part is composed by the beginning and the end. These are the time when “I” was above water, which demonstrate a transformation from storm to peace.
The second part is when “I” was dropped into the sea and the sound from the whale gradually approached. Sounds in this part is more quiet and with some background white noise from the sea water.
The third part is “inside the whale”, where “I” could hear the heartbeat of the whale (way slower than human heartbeat) and all the interesting sounds from his mouth and stomach. Also, reverberation is added with filter to demonstrate the closed and huge space inside the whale.
