Fully-Funded Ph.D. Students – NYU Energy and Propulsion Laboratory
The Energy and Propulsion Laboratory (https://wp.nyu.edu/jryu) in the Division of Engineering, New York University (NYU) Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit multiple Ph.D. students to work on aerospace propulsion systems. The successful applicants will drive a fascinating project on aerospace propulsion systems. Our research interests include high-performance computing, computational fluid dynamics, multi-physics computation, and experiments to understand reactive flows, fuel chemical kinetics, combustion, detonation, and hypersonics for future energy and propulsion systems. Qualifications and preferred skills/experience are:
- At least a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related fields before commencing the Ph.D. program
- Interested in at least one of the following: reacting flow multi-physics computation, fuel chemical kinetics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), machine learning, artificial intelligence, data-driven modeling, or propulsion systems
- Official English language proficiency test scores or receive a test waiver
– TOEFL: ≥ 79, IELTS ≥ 6.0 overall, or EmSAT English ≥ 1400

This Fellowship is a unique opportunity to pursue advanced research across the two exciting campuses in New York and Abu Dhabi. Students who receive the Fellowship complete all graduate coursework at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, Brooklyn, New York, spend subsequent years working at the Energy and Propulsion Laboratory in NYU Abu Dhabi, UAE, and receive the Ph.D. degree from the NYU Tandon School of Engineering upon graduation. Qualifications and preferred skills/experience are:
- M.S. degree is required.
- B.S. and/or M.S. degrees in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related fields with GPA ≥ 3.5/4.0 for both B.S. and M.S.
- Experience in at least one of the following: reacting flow multi-physics computation, fuel chemical kinetics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), machine learning, artificial intelligence, data-driven modeling, combustion experiment with diagnostic techniques, or propulsion systems

Post-Doctoral/Research Associate in Division of Engineering (Aerospace Propulsion) – Je Ir Ryu
The Energy and Propulsion Laboratory in the Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit multiple research/postdoctoral associates to work on aerospace propulsion.
The successful applicant will drive a fascinating project on the emerging technologies for propulsion systems. Responsibilities will include but not limited to fundamental studies of reactive flow, chemical kinetics, combustion, and detonation, for a wide range of propulsion applications including gas turbine engines for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), sustainable aviation fuels for urban air mobility (UAM), and rocket/hypersonic propulsion systems. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students.
Position Requirements
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
- Excellent reacting flow multi-physics computation experience in high-performance computing (HPC) environment
- Experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes
- Ability to present and publish results in peer-reviewed journal articles
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in code development using C++/C/Fortran and parallel computing
- Knowledge of machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), or data-driven modeling
