As a group, we write the documentation together on this notion page.

Here I am going to write some personal reflections on our final project “Anicron”.

I am mainly responsible for physical computing (figuring out how to connect the circuit and the Arduino code), 3D modeling, printing all the components, designing all the mechanisms and interaction parts of the outfit, and developing the concept.

This project really allows me to go through the iteration and developing process of designing fashion clothing for someone. Personally speaking, I think it’s far more complicated than creating a wearable because it has way too many other parameters that need to be taken into consideration. The textile, and material of the clothing play an important role in how the audience interprets and perceives the intensity of the emotion or the concept you are trying to convey. For instance, the white pla material can convey a stronger signal of offense compared with the black one because a darker color always refers to vulnerable animals’ need to find camouflage and that affects us conveying the idea of the exoskeleton.

Another fun thing I enjoy much is 3D printing. It’s interesting to see how the tree support becomes part of the printed components and together, they become an architecture, exuding a sense of sacredness.

One last thing I want to mention is that I am impressed by how a model’s expressiveness affects people’s perception of interactive fashion clothing design. Shout out to our model, Jiayi Gu, whose extraordinary performance on the runway well conveys our concept that the tail and scales can be used to send social signals as well. Even though the model will only appear for several seconds on the stage, such a strong performance helps to explain the hidden concept and design rules behind the clothing, which really shocks me.

This is the video of me, as a designer, joining the runway show. I am not an introverted person, but in front of so many audience clapping, and praising for your project, I get so nervous, even a little bit afraid of the crowd. (Begin to understand why the designer sometimes only shows up for a super short moment at the end of the fashion runway show).
