Week3_Assignment
Here is the link to the Video Playback system that I have built this week.
The artist using live video as part of his work that I have chosen is Blake Marques Carrington. One of the biggest reasons why he caught my attention is that I noticed him exploring the relationship between the physical environment around us, for example, buildings, and the live video performance. And I am really interested in that field as well. My personal insight is that though buildings are constructed by human beings, similarly to AIs, they might also have self-conscience, how they are going to express it really fascinates me. Driven by this simple motivation, I check his personal website, and here is the link to his works. Based on his bio, his work was shown in Barcelona, and the US, basically in a public place. Next, I am going to talk about 2 works that inspire me most.
This is the Year We Make Contact at FILE Festival São Paulo. And for me, it’s really a bold idea to manipulate these real-time videos and then observe the response of random people walking by. The projection mapping is done very well and the overall design of the video elements is pixel-like, which is also my type. The attractive red block moving around, together with the white and black moving background reminds me of the scene in The Terminator. Those who don’t know that there’s someone behind the scene manipulating all those things might get terrified, they will probably think that moving red dot is the building expressing his anger to people using it. And observing these responses is really interesting.
The second project that I have found amazing is this one. It’s a square box placed in a public place. This idea of putting the visual elements surrounding the musicians is a good example of proving that visual performance is of equal importance with audio performance. And I think the whole performance is really thrilling. The location he has chosen to display his work is also interesting. Placing the performance in a 17-century old building makes the ghost-like atmosphere more vivid.
