Othermill
The Othermill is a small 3-axis CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling machine allows you to create 2D and 3D objects out of durable materials.
Warnings:
- The Othermill must not be used to cut fiberglass (PCB Materials) or carbon fiber, as these create hazardous dust and will shred your lungs and may foul the machinery.
- Observe recommended spindle speeds, cutting rates and maximum pass depths.
- Do not bypass safety interlocks.
- Do not stick anything into the machine while it’s running.
- No cutting fluid or other coolant / lubrication.
- Vacuuming out the swarf after your cut is mandatory.
Materials:
The Othermill is a general-purpose 3-axis CNC mill and can mill or engrave almost anything softer than steel that fits in 5.5 inches x 4.5 inches x 1.35 inches (13.97 cm x 11.43 cm x 3.43 cm) build area.
Allowed Materials:
- Custom PCBs out of coper-clad FR-1 laminate
- Plastic (HDPE, Delrin, acrylic, polycarbonate)
- Wood
- Linoleum (used for stamps)
- Aluminum (generally 6061)
- brass (free-machining alloys like C360)
- Machining wax
- Polyurethane modeling foam
Disallowed Materials:
- Unknown alloys of aluminum or brass
- Some are not machinable
- Steel, iron, titanium
- Will break the bit
- Magnesium
- Extreme fire hazard
- Fiberglass (including FR-4), carbon fiber
- Abrasive dust – health and mechanical hazard
- Stone, glass
- Food of any kind
- Othermill is not food safe.
- Food molds are okay.
CAM:
CAM (Computer-aided manufacturing) is the process of going from a CAD model to machine-specific instructions on where to put the tool.
