Visual Metaphor Proposal

April 24, 2024 by Jingran Zhang Leave a Comment

Project Title: Power of Birth

Team Members: Irene, Jean

Concept | Storyline:

1). What is the piece (article, poem, story) for the narrative voiceover?  Or who are you going to interview?

      I remember– Zhao Lei

We are inspired by the first part of the song. A lot of metaphors were used to show the process and feelings of being born. So we will probably use the lyrics or find some relative poem as the narrative

Script:

I witness the gentle descent of raindrops, each a whispered caress.

There’s a sense of someone diminishing the vastness of the world.

I carry the luggage heavier than my own frame, dive into the depths of the Nile.

I catch sight of a peculiar cluster of halos casting uncertain shadows upon the waters.

I encounter the occasional flashes of lightning.

Several hands wielding scissors, strip me of my burdens. They wipe my brow clean.

I no longer have the chance to turn back.

Along the winding path, I stumbled upon a figure from the distant past. a smile reminiscent of someone I know adorning her features.

       2). What’s the story about?

We want to use an abstract visual way to deliver the experience of a child being given birth (from a child’s perspective). We want to visualize the laboring process and show the power of birth.

3). Which part of the story are you going to focus on?

Our focus is on finding alternative expressions of the newborn’s perspective through visuals. Some metaphors could be used to describe what the newborn sees. For example, the child’s connection to the umbilical cord and cutting it, the gestational lines the child sees, the doctor’s reaction, etc. It is kind of abstract so we want to find a way to deliver the story properly.

4). What kind of style/aesthetics are you going to pursue?

We want our images to be very artistic, we don’t reflect that this is the birth of a child at the beginning of the video, but show it at the end. We wanted to use a lot of aesthetic metaphors to show the process.

Execution Plan:

1). What equipment are you going to use when shooting the movie? (cell phone, DSLR camera, sound recorder, stabilizer..)

DSLR camera, sound recorder, stabilizer

2). Which locations will it be shot at? When is it? Day time/night/unknown? Why?

We will mainly apply indoor scenery setting to finish our shooting and both daytime and night would be the planned shooting time. Apart from the fact that indoor light can be adjusted by light, we plan to both utilize the daylight and make use of the night for some dim and blur scenes.

3). What are some challenges you might encounter and how will you prepare?

It might be difficult for us to find the suitable places and props which perfectly match our ideal plan on how to visualize this idea. We may fail to 100 percent realize our imagination or initial plan, and we would adjust our idea accordingly considering the conditions and find if there can be alternative ways to express our ideas or achieve the same effect.

4). How will you collaborate? How will you divide work? (Gantt Chart below*)

We will mainly work together when producing our project. Shooting would be fully finished by collaboration, while other tasks like script writing, voice over recording and editing might be divided to individuals.
