“How can I provide the highest quality in-classroom experience in an online classroom environment?”
Steven Menges has a good feel for technology due to his years of experience in the software industry, but he wasn’t sure if it was possible to make an online class experience be as thorough and interactive as the in-classroom experience. One of the challenges he had to consider was how students would interact and provide feedback to each other in an online environment.
Recommendations
The Digital Studio team made several recommendations for Mr. Menges, including using specific technology to increase interaction and feedback when compared to his traditional class. Another recommendation was to bring successful elements from his popular face-to-face classroom, such as visual and aural engagement techniques, to the online interactions between himself and his students. Utilizing the Digital Studio’s instructional design expertise, services, and tools were essential for the success of his course. These recommendations helped Mr. Menges achieve new and exciting outcomes in his online class.
Outcomes
NYU tools, such as NYU Classes and NYU Stream, helped Mr. Menges create an improved sense of communication in the online classroom. Video modules created by both Mr. Menges and his students helped share new ideas and student progress in the class. Students were able to interact with Mr. Menges and their classmates, got to know each other better, and had the added benefit of having more time to think about their responses to questions posted online. Utilizing the Digital Studio to create high quality video recordings (and any needed audio/video production tips) made storyboarding his content and recording comfortable and straightforward. Mr. Menges can also reuse his content for several years, making future semesters simpler. He now feels that a condensed online course is much more manageable while still providing the student engagement he hoped for.
