Drawing on long-term ethnographic research with paramilitary members of the Basij as well as Afghan disabled in low-income neighborhoods of Iran, in this talk Ahmad Moradi maps out the ways in which people solicit the very techniques of power to seek legibility, care and recognition. Thus, shedding light on the productive nature of governmentality, he will discuss how the willful submission to the modes of governance may become a terrain of struggle for excluded citizens and the ‘not-yet’ or less-than citizens to gain a degree of political inclusion and social membership.
