Fluid Mosaic

Concept and Design:

The concept of this project originated from my love of art exhibitions such as the Van Gogh art exhibit and other projector exhibitions. I thought that it would be a unique and innovative idea to utilize mirrors as way to create projections or reflections of light, which is why this mirror acrylic material was one of the main materials I used for this project. During my user testing session, I still had not lazer cut the mirror acrylic piece so it was rather underwhelming. Mainly what was said during our user testing session was that the art should have more intention or that the intention of the art should be more clear. In order to do so, I decided to adapt the movement of the shapes in the code to react differently with the motion sensor and I also added LED lights that would randomly configure with the color of the shapes. I think this added more to look at and achieved my projector look better.

Fabrication and Product:

The main material that I utilized was the mirror acrylic material in order to achieve a projector look with the reflection of light. My original plan for this project was extremely different than what it actually turned out to be. I originally wanted to make a fabric installation using a projector but later on I decided that I wanted to go for my second idea with the mirrors. This was mainly due to logistical concerns are the amount of work for a single person project made it difficult to be able to complete this project.

You can see the differences in my two sketches are rather drastic since at first I had a much larger scale project planned but the smaller scale was something that would be more manageable for me.

Conclusions:

Overall, I’m extremely proud of the project that I was able to achieve. I feel like I had really good audience interaction with my project since most were amazed by the colors of the lights and the movements of the shapes. I think most people enjoyed that it was something pretty too look at. The meaning of the artwork is that our lives can be rather chaotic and full of things where we may have one clear idea of things but often times we look at the reflection of what is actually clear. One thing professor Rudy mentioned that would help the me transmit my message better would be to associate the shapes and colors with natural patterns seen in nature. I really like this idea and I definitely think it would be something cool to change or improve within this project. If I had more time I would’ve loved to do this, but overall I think my project is something that people should care about because it allows viewers to think about their lives whilst looking at something beautiful.
