Research Project- Part 1
The Fan
The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin
For this story, the artifact I can imagine is a mirror fan. It’s a Chinese styled fan with pieces of shattered mirror inside it so when you open it up in front of someone, all they see is a distorted version of themselves. When light shines on the mirrors, they will project any images you program the mirrors to show. The fan shape also allows for easy storage access (taking it out and putting it away) not to mention the semi circle shape would serve well to capture the light from the sun to create the projections.
Tech fabric
The Veldt by Ray Bradbury
What the tech fabric would do is that it would be made of a malleable material which creates different sensory vibrations and lights up with different colors to calm or soothe the children from the short story ‘The Veldt’. This would allow the parents to have more control over the children since it would be a textile and can be inconspicuous hidden in clothes and blankets, so the children would never have to know. The fabric is made from a soft carbon fiber material and is practically unbreakable to anything, making it child proof. The only issue I could foresee with it, is that if there are internal malfunctioning problems, it would be difficult to open and fix. This is why I would try and make it out of really strong materials that can’t be destroyed.
