The way I remember that this character means dad, is that the top part with the cross looks like a workers hat, while the bottom half is like 2 eyes with a mouth. Another reason is that his face is very symmetrical and straight which is normal for older men. Whereas the character for mama has more flow and movement.
When I look at this character I think of my dad, because the upper part looks like crossed arms (when your dad is standing and looking at you angrily with his arms crossed)
