For this assignment we received 3 prompts; Playful, Absurd, Shame. My partner for this project Shu-Ju Lin and I wanted to deal with subject of surveillance. We knew we wanted to make an object that “looks at literally” we wanted to humanize the object of surveillance, making people very aware that they are looking and being looked at.
The object was to be an Eyeball from the get go but we examined different scales uses and users before deciding to make it come in the form of candy. Dispensed from a Machine suggesting how available, cheep and easy it is to surveil your surroundings.
Since I had a candy dispenser and that we were not going to buy 50 cameras we decided to mock-up the iBalls in the dispenser and create one functional larger scale one.
If we were to manufacture these I would definitely try to solve the electronics to fit the small scale balls the main issue being battery power.
The camera was really super easy to connect (once we got the channels figured out).Very much a ‘plug n’ play’ situation, and if you have some time you can order one of these cameras from china for about $6. We did however encounter some puzzling problems, the biggest one being that the device heats up very quickly. we could not find the cause and this phenomena is documented in blogs of other users but is not explained or solved. quality perhaps?!
