3D Animation; Unreal Engine, Fuse and Mixamo
If I thought After Effects was complex this one week project in 3D animation was a mind melt.
one one hand creating the character in fuse and then animating it in Mixamo was pretty straight forward,
on the other hand importing the character into Unreal Engine was a test in perseverance. The software hated my Mac it kept crashing and I had no idea why (I have a decent computer). After fighting with it for a good 48 hours somebody told me that Unreal just doesn’t like Macs. So I started all over again with a production computer from school.
I was not going to repeat my mistake from the previous project and forced myself to approach this as a learning exercise rather than a project. I am a sucker for narratives and it is hard for me to do anything without working out my motivation first. I had to remind myself that it was going to be that or nothing at all being in the final week of the semester and knee deep in preparation for the winter show.
I started out by designing my character in Fuse. I call her Emilia. Needless to say I got carried away with this because I took the fashion part way to seriously!! I couldn’t help it I’m a fashion designer and it’s like playing dress up. Emilia needed to look sharp.
My goal was to be able to start to understand the language of this program (Unreal). To build a box and to place my character inside it, breakdancing. I build a floating gold room in the sky and imported my Emilia into it – Dancing a sequence of 5 different break dancing moves.I made sure to import a T-pose first so all of Emilias dance bits would have the same skeleton.
I used some directional lighting to set a club atmosphere and added free chairs and tables to dress the scene. I want to have multiple Emilias watching herself dance. But like I said this has been a run to the finish race so that will have to happen on my own free time.
Sadly the finished product was composed as I mentioned on an ITP PC computer and as I write this post those are temporarily unavailable to me and since they are PC files I cannot display them on my MAC. So I can’t show you the result. It will be added to this post s soon.
