Week one – Stop motion animation
When thinking of what our animation short would be, my partners;David Azar, Guillermo Montecinos and I, started by thinking of our world, at the moment, ITP. We are surrounded by wires, boards and an array of electronic thingies.
We decided to let these beautiful object take center stage. We started up by trying to figure out what were the fabrication possibilities with these parts(considering time restraints), they could be animals, alien monsters or as we ended up deciding, fighters and spectators in a nail bitting WW- LED match.
We tried to keep the components as close to their original form without humanizing them too much. Except for the main 2 characters of the fighters which we decided to make out of three LED lights giving the figure more motion options. The “set” is a real extra large bread board there are no added elements that cannot easily be found in the ITP workshop. The set is very ‘clean’ almost as if this breadboard world is flouting, detached from it’s ordinary surroundings.
shooting this exercise was like learning magic! and it turns out magic is a lot of work. I already had great respect for animators but wow! It is so labor intensive!! There were a few questions/challenges we encountered along the shoot; when shooting a multi figured scene the question of where the focus point should be kept coming up,how many increments of movement were too many and when panning around the set perspective was very tricky.
For the soundtrack we opted for gibberish we thought this would make the scenario more imaginative and humorous. Using effects of punches, stretching ropes and roaring crowds to tap into a collective association of sporting events, specifically WWF fights.
The Graphics for the opening/closing titles were also created to follow a dynamic, yet somewhat minimalist feel. We used the official WWF logo to set the viewers expectation and play with the cultural references it brings with it.
The end result is a visualization of a world I was throw myself into 2 months ago. Most of the time I look at these little components and they look like beautiful, colorful little creatures. personally at times it feels like a fight and I am getting knocked out but sometimes there are some small victories 🙂
Hope you enjoy watching it as much as we had making it.
