Tools of a Trade refer to a set of tools one needs in order to successfully preform one’s work or chosen outlet of expression.
I am a Fashion Designer and for the better part of the last ten year, a Fashion Design Professor at Shenkar, one of the most respected programs in the world. The tools of my trade are physical objects that have been around for hundreds of years; paper, scissors, rulers fabric etc. But also and perhaps more importantly the human body, my brain and my mouth. The decision to join NYU’S ITP program,(tech abbreviations deserve their own post) and to some extent set aside a good part of my tools seemed like a no brainer. If the goal was to step outside my comfort zone and truly learn new things, I needed to temporarily but literally let go of my thimble.
School hasn’t even started yet but even orientation has left me dazed and confused and frankly I miss my thimble.
This blog will feature my attempts at learning to talk, walk and hopefully eventually dance with new tools. It will serve as a confessional where I will share the hardships and triumphs of this path I have taken. In addition since my brain and my mouth are still with me (at this point) this will also be a platform to share visual inspiration which is my favorite thing to hunt for and the starting point for any successful creative process.
Stay tuned It is going to get pretty ugly very soon….
