During the fall of 2019 I was invited by Professor Rick Litvin from NYU’s Kanbar Institute of Film & Television to meet Maximillian Re-Sugiura, the principle of NYC’s vaunted High School of Art and Design. Our goal was to engender activism and awareness on environmental issues by having students create Public Service Announcements (PSAs) which would be shown during Earth Day events at the Tisch School of the Arts. A few months after our initial meetings, COVID-19 entered the lives of every New Yorker.
Students were then given the option to use the pandemic in place of a traditional environmental theme. Working with their cellphones during an unprecedented global quarantine many wonderful projects were realized. Their full list may be found here. On this page are a few distinguished projects. In addition to discovering the creativity and talent of the students, I was introduced to some o fthe dedicated faculty who help to mentor and train their charges in the discipline of story-telling. Teachers rarely get the recognition which they merit. Mr. Hanan Harchol, a Film/Video Teacher at NYC’s High School of Art & Design is one such person. His students will be forever changed by his influence. In time, his students will change the world. — Peter Terezakis
