breaking the boundaries

While still a digital medium, I feel that a super interesting format for Stairs would be a video game, more specifically an endless scroller or runner. I think that, given the history of the usage of staircases to convey a point (take Frank Ocean’s “Endless” or the staircase scene in a movie like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. In this infinite scroller, the player would be able to go through doors that lead to different rooms with said staircases in them. In addition, as you go up or down, subtle changes happen. For example, if you start at floor 30, at floor 300 there will be a completely different color palette, darker music, and a more ominous vibe all around.

I feel that staircases as a game would be fascinating. Especially with the concepts of the metaverse that were talked about the other day, I think that by having a game where a user is able to walk through doors and possibly even be teleported into different games (using the stairs as a hub of sorts) would be really interesting and definitely metaverse pushing.

This would be a 3D game where the user is able to freely travel around and explore, and possibly even be able to incorporate 4D elements (including being able to go back in time, travel back to different rooms, and explore the concepts of space and time in a single player server). This “trippy” aesthetic would give the game lots of character that is not usually found in video games.

Having all of these elements would really go back to my theme, in a staircase you go up and you go down, the inbetween is all up to you. There’s always the cliche of once you’re at the top then you can only go down or once you’re at the bottom you can only go up, but what if there was no defined top or bottom? That’s what I would want to tap into and explore.
