K-12 Research

Our laboratory participates in a variety of K-12 research programs, which are designed to train science and engineering students early in their education.  These include research experiences in the summer and during the academic year.  The K-12 trainees typically work with senior doctoral students or postdoctoral associates.

The NYU Tandon InspirED K-12 program, developed by Prof. Hartman, is designed for students interested in completing engineering research during NYU’s fall and spring semesters.  In this program, eligible K-12 11th and 12th grade students work in-person or remote after school on research projects led by the laboratory.  The results of the research experience are disseminated at the end of the spring term via a written senior thesis and a presentation at a competition such as the NYU Tandon Research Expo or the Terra Northeast Regional Science and Engineering Fair.  Participation in such an event is an opportunity to outreach the community on the student’s research results.

The NYU Tandon ARISE K-12 program is a full-time, seven-week program for 10th and 11th grade New York Students.  The program includes: i) college level workshops and seminars, ii) a high-level research experience in participating NYU faculty labs, and iii) mentoring in that placement by a doctoral student or postdoctoral associate.  This unique research program is comprehensive.  The students are introduced to key elements of academic research: the scientific method and ethics, data collection and analysis, research practices, and lab safety.
