The Director of Museum Education is responsible for cultivating a vibrant community around Historic Richmond Town through producing unique and memorable educational public programs.This position is responsible for overseeing the school tours, living history and select public programs. The Director is key in expanding and formalizing outward facing public access points. This position reports to the CEO. Reporting to the Director is a support team, which includes seasonal and part time staff. 

Historic Richmond Town includes New York City’s living history village, a historical museum, an arboretum, a working family farm, and two other historic sites – including one of the oldest houses in New York State. Over 100,000 people visit annually to enjoy tours, education programs, museum exhibits, special events and the grounds. Primary responsibilities and values: 

Programming: 20% 

  • Develops, executes, maintains and improves a year-round calendar of small and large-scale programs, activities, and initiatives across the humanities discipline 441 Clarke Avenue, Staten Island, New York 10306-1198 

from ideation through evaluation. Keeping up to date with museum and public history-based programming and education and seeking to strengthen HRT’s position as a thought leader for site-based spaces, programming, and community projects. 

  • Proactively collaborates across departments to ensure a high level of internal coordination. Externally, cultivates and maintains strong relationships with community leaders and organizations, seeking new and meaningful opportunities for partnership both on-site and of-site. 
  • Promotes public history as a key democratic element of community, education, and historic preservation. Believes in the ability of history to improve lives and has a strong drive to work towards a more just and equitable society. Possesses an interest in providing a platform for life-long learning, history, and nature. ● Strives for excellence and is detailed orientation in all initiatives. 
  • Respects and admires the history of HRT, while seeking to creatively envisions new and fresh ideas that achieve multiple goals, articulates their value, and works toward them over time with many different partners and collaborators. 

Management: 30% 

  • Excels in staff management and interpersonal interaction, has keen listening skills, strong ability to guide others at different levels of experience, and has the ability to teach and be taught by their staff. is includes the hiring and termination of employees. 
  • Advocates in a patient and inspiring way for public programming, community engagement, and related initiatives. 
  • Evaluates and is accountable for intradepartmental initiatives with regards to the impact on the mission. 

Administration: 50% 

  • Builds support for HRT in the various communities around it and throughout New York City. Understands the various dynamics at play and develops personal relationships through spending time and being an effective listener and community partner. 
  • Weighs in on strategic plans for the organization. 
  • Possess strong decision-making capabilities and a flexible nature to accommodate many ideas and working styles. 
  • Drats the annual department budget; monitor expenses and income throughout the year ensuring adherence to budget. 
  • Prepares regular department reports. 

POSITION DETAILS

  • Full-time,$70,000, commensurate with experience. 
  • 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with mandatory participation during the Richmond County Fair over Labor Day Weekend, as well as occasional weekend and evening work in order to direct special programming.
