Job Title: Collections Management Assistant

Job Status: Part-time, Temporary (2-3 days per week)

Salary: $20/hour

Position Summary
The Collections Management Assistant collaborates with the Conservation and Collections teams to maintain and care for the diverse collection and uniquely installed galleries in the historic Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. This work supports a variety of projects including conservation work, collection photography, scholarly research, and gallery refurbishments.

Essential Functions and Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist the Registrar, Collections in coordinating and performing art handling duties in support of conservation projects, collection photography, and scholarly visits.
  • Create new housing for artworks in storage; may include box-making, fabricating cushions, carving foam, mat-making, etc.
  • Perform data entry duties in support of the Collections and Conservation departments, using TMS-Collections and TMS-Conservation Studio databases.
  • Assist the Objects Conservator with coordination and other related activities for the Collection Maintenance Technicians (CMTs) who regularly clean the galleries. 
  • Assist with other collections management activities such as Integrated Pest Management, cleaning of storage areas, etc. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Requirements

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree, or working toward a degree, in Art History, Museum Studies, Studio Art, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
  • Able to work independently or in a team-setting with a high level of attention to detail.
  • A high level of personal accountability for work, including prioritization of projects and meeting deadlines in support of the Museum’s strategic goals.
  • Must work flexibly and creatively, adapting to the needs of a wide range of stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and auditory), as well as strong listening skills. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.
  • Commitment to advancing the ISGM’s diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) initiatives.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, bend, reach and stand for extended periods of time. Comfortable stooping, pushing, and pulling while working.
  • Must be able to reach and work above shoulders, climb up and down and work on ladders, scaffolding, and/or a scissor lift up to a height up to 36 feet.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds comfortably.

Desirable

  • Experience working in a museum environment with collection objects, preferred.
