(P/T) Visitor Experience Associate at the Italian American Museum (IAM)

Job Title: Visitor Experience Associate 

Job Status: Part-time

Location: New York, NY

Salary: $20/hour

Schedule: 12-18 hours per week on average. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday availability is preferred. The Museum is open 12pm-5pm Thursday-Saturday, and shifts are 11:30am-5:15 pm. Working special events after regular hours of operation is mandatory and will be assigned on a rotating basis.


Museum overview
The new Italian American Museum (IAM) will serve as a cultural hub and community nexus for Italian Americans and the Little Italy neighborhood. Through permanent and temporary exhibits, robust educational and cultural programming, and collaborations with the community, the IAM will become the preeminent center for learning about and engaging with Italian culture/history as a platform for sharing
Italian American voices and celebrating Italian American achievements.

The Italian American Museum preserves, promotes, and celebrates the culture and history of Italian Americans, serving as a living record of their contributions to America and a bridge between the remarkable past and the evolving future of the community.

By allowing Italian Americans to share their story in their own voice, the Museum will encourage a full appreciation of what it means to be Italian American.

About the role
The primary goals of this position is to welcome visitors, sell daily admission, memberships, check-in guests, manage lines, and aid visitors while they explore the Museum during Museum hours, special events, rentals, and programs after hours. Greeting visitors and monitoring timed entry into the ticketed exhibitions requires a welcoming presence and excellent communication skills. The ideal candidate can multitask with ease and possesses strong hospitality, organizational, and teamwork
skills. The ability to maintain a positive attitude while working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment is crucial.

Responsibilities
● Greet all visitors with warmth and kindness while effectively communicating exhibition guidelines, ticketing policies, day-of events, and offer guidance.
● Manage visitor traffic for the exhibition through strong organizational skills and effective communication with staff and visitors.
● Check in guests and monitor timed entry into exhibitions and program spaces
● Sell daily Museum admission, event tickets, and Memberships, and store items; process credit cards and ring up cash.
● Demonstrate holistic knowledge of the Museum’s exhibitions, programming,
Membership benefits, events, facilities, and operational changes (all staff members will be given time to become familiar with the Museum).
● Provide directions so visitors can navigate the building with ease
● Availability on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays, up to 18 hours a week
● Attend staff meetings once a week

Qualifications
A successful candidate will meet many of these requirements, and have the desire and capacity to learn the rest on the job.
● High school diploma or equivalent.
● Experience cash handling and the ability to maintain an organized cash drawer.
● Ability to learn nuanced ticketing policies and effectively communicate them to visitors.
● Ability to provide excellent visitor experience in a fast paced environment.
● Commitment to the Museum’s mission to provide customer service that is welcoming and inclusive to all
● Ability to work well within a team.
● A positive attitude
● Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. and work on your feet.
● Ability to implement Museum policies in a manner that is friendly but firm in order to maintain the safety of artifacts, artwork, and visitors.

Preferred skills
● Proficiency in language(s) other than English including but not limited to Italian,
Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese,
● Interest in Italian Culture and American History and/or related fields
