The IU Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (IUMAA) takes aspects of the former museum and the Laboratory of Archaeology and combines them into 1 cohesive experience. With an impactful long-term vision focusing on purposeful storytelling, stewarding collections, and bringing these items to communities, the IUMAA thoughtfully houses and displays over 5 million artifacts that span across a broad range of the human experience. The IUMAA is accessible for research as well as teaching and is culturally connected to our broader community through partnerships with Indigenous communities, advisory boards, and other IUMAA community members.
Job Summary
The coordinator will primarily be focused on the development, implementation, and evaluation of transformative educational experiences related to the IU Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (IUMAA) mission, vision, and values. The coordinator position reports directly to the Learning and Community Engagement Manager.
The Learning and Community Engagement Department is responsible for providing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to engage with the museum in dynamic and impactful ways.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Partners and collaborates with Operations and Guest Services, Exhibits, External Communications, Curatorial, and the Collection teams, and with students, IU faculty, external community consultants and various organizations as needed.
- Develops, schedules, and implements dynamic and impactful public programs.
- Oversees the Student Advisory Council recruitment, meetings, and logistics planning.
- Develops and conducts tours, workshops, and curricula (digital/physical) in collaboration with the Learning and Community Engagement Manager and community members. Curricula may address specific exhibits or aspects of identity, race, cultural production and human history, creativity, anthropology, etc.
- Facilitates object-based teaching and learning for all ages.
- Creates and facilitates exhibit support materials like activities, gallery guides, or sensory tour kits.
- Conducts outreach visits to schools, assisted living facilities, or other venues.
- Supports volunteers, interns, and practicum students through the development of tour notes or other training materials.
- Maintains departmental records related to programs, tours, etc.
- Coordinates with other departments as needed to meet departmental objectives and goals.
- Helps maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment for visitors, faculty, and staff.
- Other projects and responsibilities as assigned.
General Responsibilities
- Creates, implements, and evaluates experiences that connect audiences with the university, including local and rural outreach, campus, summer camps, home school events, teacher professional development workshops, and family programming.
- Supports the activities of other university departments with expertise on the audience desired.
- Maintains affiliations with colleagues within academic university, locally and nationally.
- Develops and conducts training of a pool of educators who can facilitate programs.
- Develops and conducts training for tours with docents.
- Manages the daily operation of programs in accordance with the university’s strategic plans.
- Develops and manages experience’s budget(s).
- Oversees online content and technology.
- Seeks sources of funding and works with development staff to develop proposals and annual reports.
- Provides process improvement suggestions to supervisor.

EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelors degree in education or other related field

- Masters degree in social studies education, museum education, folklore, history, or anthropology with a public practice emphasis
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 2 years of experience in education, fine arts, or other related field
Preferred

- 1 year of experience developing and leading museum tours and/or museum programs
- 3 years of experience in a museum education setting
- Experience teaching in museums and/or with objects
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

- Valid driver’s license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire
