The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is currently accepting applications for a Membership Development Officer. The MoMA Membership program is responsible for driving a significant portion of annual revenue for the Museum. Reporting to the Director of Membership, the Membership Development Officer will be responsible for developing a strategy to acquire, engage, retain, and upgrade members at the Supporting category and above—overseeing relationship management and all onsite and digital touchpoints. The Development Officer will work closely with Development colleagues across External Affairs to identify high-potential donors and create compelling philanthropic opportunities that will lead to donors’ long-term commitment to the Museum and substantial annual growth of the Patron Program.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Delivers annual strategic plan of initiatives and activity to acquire, engage, and retain members at the Supporting category and above, including formal appeals, regular cadence of emails, one-on-one donor cultivation, event strategy, and retail opportunities, with consideration of revenue goals and cost efficiencies.
  • Builds strategy for first-year retention of new or recently upgraded members, and executes high-touch “year one journey” through the point of renewal.
  • Collaborates with Individual Philanthropy team to identify and solicit new members, and steward a selection of high-potential existing members in an effort to cultivate larger gifts at a higher category of membership or in support of other MoMA programs such as the Modern Fund, Director’s Council, curatorial committees, and education or exhibition funding.
  • Facilitates all events for Supporting members and above, including invitation and post-event communications, pre-event planning, vendor relations, and cross-departmental collaborations with Retail, Special Events, curatorial departments, Marketing, Communications, Visitor Engagement, Graphic Design, Security, Building Operations, Learning and Engagement, and Digital Media.
  • Creates and executes communications capturing robust, weekly set of onsite and digital offerings for members of the Patron Program.
  • Personally cultivates members through direct engagement at member events or personalized tours and experiences, and creates customized opportunities for members to engage with Director of Membership and other senior leaders.
  • Serves as point person for all members at the Supporting category and above, outside of the Individual Philanthropy relationship manager pool, and manages a dedicated phone line.
  • Maintains, tracks and analyzes member data, reports on revenue and engagement performance across the organization, and optimizes ongoing strategy, recommending new programs or benefits.
  • Manages member cultivation budget and provides all budget-related materials to Finance.
  • Oversees and is responsible for benefit fulfillment (e.g., member events and programs, discounts, catalog mailings, and guest passes).
  • Conducts the annual tax-deductibility calculation for the membership program.
  • Makes, executes and exercises independent judgment about related Membership and fundraising management policies.
  • Performs other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.  

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred, and four to seven years relevant experience in a membership, guest services, or development organization.
  • Track record of executing a successful fundraising strategy with a focus on program growth, building donor support, and maintaining donor relationships.
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills as they relate to both internal colleagues and external members and donors.
  • Budget and database experience required, Salesforce preferred.
  • Knowledge of modern and contemporary art a plus.
  • This position is in scope of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI) DSS), therefore, any offer of employment for this position will be contingent on the satisfactory completion of a criminal background check. The background check will be performed by an outside vendor in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and city statutes.
