The ICAA:
The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) is a nonprofit membership organization with 15 chapters across the country committed to promoting and preserving the practice, understanding, and appreciation of classical design. To do so, the ICAA offers a broad range of educational programs. These include intensives for architecture and design students, introductory programs for middle school students, lectures and walking tours for the public, continuing education courses for professionals and enthusiasts, travel programs to visit classical masterpieces, the publishing of original and reprinted books, and an annual journal entitled the Classicist. Through the annual Arthur Ross Awards, as well as other national and regional award programs, the ICAA also honors contemporary leaders of classical design and the related fields.
The Position:
The ICAA has established the Richard H. Driehaus Curricula for the Built Environment with the generous support of the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation to create new educational programming and augment existing programming with the goal of centering urbanism, sustainability, historic preservation, healthy cities, and equity as core tenets of thoughtful classical design.
Reporting to the Vice President, Education, this coordinator role, entitled Richard H. Driehaus Education and Curriculum Coordinator, helps to support the expansion of the ICAA’s education programming by providing administrative and curriculum development support to the Education Office on all programs, in addition to making in-roads with potential educational partners and collaborators. The coordinator will play a vital role in advancing the ICAA’s Richard H. Driehaus Curricula for the Built Environment, and act as a core team member supporting the ICAA’s educational programming for the twenty-first century.
The Coordinator will have a unique and exciting opportunity to help shape the future of the ICAA’s educational offerings, and will gain experience in nonprofit administration.
Responsibilities:
● Assist with administrative duties essential to the smooth running of the Education Department to include, but not limited to: database management; manage general education inquiries; set up for educational programs; assist with preparation of appointment letters and related administration tasks; submit and coordinate payments, invoices, and relevant documentation with the Finance department; fulfill student transcript requests and progress assessments as needed for the Certificate in Classical Architecture; process AIA CES course and attendance submissions; assist with the Awards programs managed by the Education department; and research and data entry for Education department projects.
● Assist in developing and executing an outreach strategy to engage new academic and professional practitioners, along with new partnering organizations and institutions.
● Assist the Education Committee with developing curricula encompassing urbanism, sustainability, and preservation of built environments. This includes, but is not limited to, connecting with potential instructors to deliver curricular offerings and suggesting meaningful changes to existing educational offerings.
● Manage additions and edits to the ICAA’s Classical Primer–a resource document used throughout ICAA educational programs–by identifying relevant areas of expansion and liaising with contributors.
● Assist with the planning and implementation of the biennial Richard H. Driehaus Education Forum.
● Assist with the expansion of the Architecture of Place online lecture & interview series to include additional installments with a focus on contemporary cities and urban design.
● Assist in a Teaching Assistant capacity at a variety of education programs, including but not limited to Continuing Education courses, Workshops, the annual four-week Summer Studio, and Youth Programming.
● Investigate information about emerging and relevant subject matters to address within the ICAA’s overall curriculum.
● Develop and maintain contacts with academicians and practitioners who have the knowledge and skills to deliver newly-developed courses centering urbanism, sustainability, and historic preservation.
● Seek out and participate in professional development related to DEI initiatives in education and curricular development.
● Assist the Education department with library projects such as accession and data entry in LibraryWorld, organization of physical materials, and outreach to student groups as needed.
● Assist with writing and reviewing education-related articles for the ICAA website.
● Regularly review and update the relevant areas of content on the ICAA website.
● Other projects and tasks as assigned.
The essential skills, knowledge, and experience required are:
● Bachelor’s degree
● One to two years of experience in the field
● Teaching experience at undergraduate or graduate level
● Knowledge of sustainable architecture or urban design, the tenets of classical design, and architectural and/or urban history
● An ability to prioritize work in a busy and fast-paced environment
● An ability to work independently
● Strong writing skills
● Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends
● Excellent organizational skills
● Experience with Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), as well as knowledge of Instagram and other social media platforms; experience with Raiser’s Edge, Collector Systems, InDesign, Photoshop, and/or LibraryWorld is a plus, but not required
● The ability to communicate efficiently and clearly. Must be comfortable over the phone and over email
