Description

The Binghamton University Art Museum seeks an energetic and engaging Curator of Collections and Exhibitions who will initiate, organize, and implement an ambitious exhibition program. A successful candidate will have 3-5 years of experience working in a museum setting and the ability to conduct scholarly research and to communicate to a range of audiences. The candidate will ideally have experience writing grant proposals and will anticipate participating in the museum’s path toward accreditation. Curator of Collections and Exhibitions serves as instructor for the museum intern class each semester (8-12 students each semester) and supervises 1-2 collections interns per semester. The successful candidate will partner with the Director to liaise with other departments at a high level and correspond with donors and alumni as necessary. This full-time position requires a commitment to the study and interpretation of the permanent collection of approximately 4,500 objects, to collaborate with the registrar to review metadata for objects in the permanent collection, and to advise the Director on acquisitions and deaccessioning.

Requirements:

•Master’s degree in art history or related field

• 3-5 years of curatorial experience

• Knowledge of standard curatorial practices and exhibition development

• Experience in object-based teaching

• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and students across disciplines

Preferences:

• PhD in art history or related field

•  Knowledge of Asian arts

• Proven skills in research, writing and communication for general and scholarly audiences

• Experience writing grant proposals

• Experience preparing documents necessary for accreditation with the American Alliance of Museums

•Familiarity with Gallery Systems databases (TMS or EmbARK)
