HG&Co, a nationally-recognized visitor-centered evaluation firm, is hiring data collectors for a visitor study at the Library of Congress. Data collectors are needed to intercept visitors and ask them to complete a self-administered survey on a touchscreen tablet, record numbers of those that refuse, and other related tasks. The tablet for data entry will be provided. 

This is an excellent opportunity to work with an audience research company, gain experience collecting data, and learn about museums and libraries. 

We will hire 3-5 individuals as data collectors to ensure adequate coverage. The position will involve anywhere between 10 and 30 hours of work per data collector per month. 

This temporary position pays $25 per hour. Training will begin in late June, and data collection will take place from July 2024 – December 2024. Timing can be flexible. For example, if you are available July, September, October but not the other months, we may still be interested in hiring you. Training and support, both in-person and remote, will be provided throughout the project.

To be eligible, candidates need to:

  1. Be able to travel to the Library for up to 5- or 6-hour shifts between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:30 pm on both weekends and weekdays (dates flexible, potential for Thursday evening hours),
  2. Have completed-or are in the process of completing-their undergraduate degree,
  3. Have regular access to a computer and internet for online training and communication,
  4. Be able to complete the CITI Human Subjects Research certification within mid-June  (or have a current certification), preferably through their university,
  5. Be able to respond to the project manager within 1 day, and
  6. Be eligible for work via W-9 form restrictions (either a U.S. citizen or a person defined as a “resident alien”). 

Ideally, candidates for this position would have: 

  1. Familiarity with interviewing people they don’t know in-person,
  2. Have the confidence to recruit strangers for the study, and 
  3. Be ready to think on their feet. 

Individuals with familiarity with social science research procedures, conventions, and designs are preferred. While experience in museums is always welcomed, we are interested in individuals with a diverse set of backgrounds. A major in sociology, anthropology, psychology, political science or geography might be helpful, but other experience such as sales could also be relevant. Fluency in other languages is a plus, but not mandatory.
