ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

The Department of Education and Public Engagement furthers the New Museum’s role as a center for today’s art and ideas, and a catalyst for exchange between contemporary artists and the public.

The Assistant Director of Education (ADE) oversees the Department’s teen and family programs, exhibition tours, and school and community partnerships. As the Museum prepares for its architectural expansion, anticipated to open in 2025, the ADE will work closely with the Director of Education and Public Engagement to develop the vision and goals for these program areas in the expanded building, as well as their operating and evaluation systems.

The ADE will use their expertise to deepen the Department’s work with young people and the communities surrounding the Museum. Additionally, they will collaboratively integrate these audiences into the Department’s artist residency program and other special projects at the intersection of artistic practice and community engagement. Often acting as a liaison between the Museum and its publics, they will cultivate and sustain strong relationships with artists, community organizations, educators, and researchers.

The ADE supervises full and part-time staff members who support teen and family programs, exhibition tours, and school and community partnerships.

Working hours will be 40 hours/week, 10:00am-6:00pm, Monday through Friday. Occasional evenings and weekends required. The ADE reports to the Director of Education and Public Engagement.

Responsibilities:

• Conceptualize, develop, and implement teen and family programs, exhibition tours, and school and community partnerships.

• Hire, train, and supervise staff members and teaching artists to advance programmatic vision and goals.

• Build relationships with community stakeholders in the neighborhoods surrounding the Museum and develop new partnerships and programs in collaboration with them.

• Demonstrate initiative in researching and integrating new approaches to community engagement and museum teaching.

• Develop and manage program budgets. Work on grant proposals and reports.

• Collaborate with marketing and communications staff to promote programs, share stories emerging from the department’s work, and engage audiences.

 

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Art History, Art Education, Museum Studies, or Fine Art preferred, or equivalent work experience
  • 5-7 years of experience in art education; 3 years of supervisory experience; and advanced knowledge of contemporary art and teaching theories and strategies
  •  Ability to envision, strategize and execute multiple projects simultaneously, exemplary oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in staff management and mentorship, project management, program development, and budgeting
  • Knowledge of education evaluation methods and experience using them to measure impact and improve programs
  • Demonstrated commitment to values of access and inclusion and the ability to work respectfully with staff members, artists, and audiences of diverse ages, backgrounds, experiences, and identities
  •  Established relationships with local cultural and community organizations desired but not required
  •  Knowledge of the NYC educational ecosystem also desired by not required
  • Language skills, especially languages spoken in the neighborhoods surrounding the Museum (Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese), are a plus
