Luis De Jesus Los Angeles is seeking an experienced full-time Gallery Registrar/Manager. The role is responsible for coordination of all incoming and outgoing shipments related to exhibitions, art fairs, and special projects. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and possess exceptional attention to detail with knowledge of best practices related to registrar duties, including art handling and inventory management, overseeing the physical care of artworks, coordinating exhibition preparations, and facilitating domestic and international shipments, consignments, and museum loans.
Position requirements:
The ideal candidate must have exceptional multitasking and organizational skills, time management skills, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. The Registrar works closely with the gallery’s exhibitions and sales teams to ensure the proper and timely execution of condition reports, handling, packing, crating, transportation, shipping, and storing of artworks. Solid experience working with US and international shipping companies and customs brokers and familiarity with US and international shipping procedures and customs regulations is a must. Ability to exercise discretion, professional judgment, and prioritize and meet tight deadlines are vital to the role. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Administration
– Maintain gallery database with incoming and outgoing inventory
– Generate consignment and loan forms, and certificates of authenticity
– Generate exhibition and art fair materials including checklists, price lists, artist binders, etc.
– Liaise with artists; and working with assistant/intern, compile and organize artist files including CVs, bios, images, etc.
Shipping/Operations
Working closely with the Preparator/Shipping Manager to:
– Obtain quotes, coordinate and track domestic and international shipments of artworks via freight carriers & private art handlers for gallery exhibitions, art fairs, clients, etc.
– Oversee the handling and packing of artworks for storage and transport.
– Oversee organization of the gallery’s physical artwork storage.
– Oversee exhibition installation and deinstallation.
Qualifications:
BA, BFA, or MA in Art History, Institution Management or related field. Fast learner with excellent verbal and written communication skills; high capacity to identify issues, analyze data, think critically, and propose effective solutions. Proficiency with Mac OS X environment, MS Office Suite, Adobe and Photoshop, Apple and Google Applications, as well as experience using gallery inventory management systems (Primer and Exhibit-E a plus). Positive, good-natured team player.
