Departmental Overview

The UC Botanical Garden is a unit of the Berkeley Natural History Museums administered by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. The Garden’s broad mission is to develop and maintain a diverse collection of plants in support of the University’s missions in teaching and worldwide research in plant biology. Additional major roles include conservation of plant diversity and promoting public understanding and appreciation of plants and the natural environment, through many Garden activities, including through a diverse array of public education programs.

The Garden is a living museum with one of the most diverse plant collections in North America. A priceless resource for international research, conservation and public enjoyment, the Garden covers 34 acres nestled in Strawberry Canyon. The Botanical Garden is open to the public, of whom many (>5500) are Garden members.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the initial contact for Garden Tribute inquiries (brick, benches and trees). In consult with the Development Director plans, coordinates and helps execute donor visits at the Garden regarding these, finalizes these orders with outside vendors and oversees their placement.
  • Along with Development Director, oversees donor follow up once plaques are complete.
  • Meets Tribute fundraising goals.
  • Maintains and updates donor data in campus fundraising system (CADS) and Botanical Garden database (Altru) and supervises student employees with this task as well.
  • Processes donations into data bases and forwards all relevant components to campus in a timely manner.
  • Serves as the secondary development lead for the Botanical Garden.
  • Under the guidance of the Director of Development the Development Associate assists in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding prospective and existing donors in line with best practices of Moves Management. 
  • Works with the Director of Development to plan and organize fundraising campaigns and strategies, which will include multiple components.
  • Pulls reports from the donor databases to create and distribute customized donor acknowledgments in a timely manner.
  • Attends functions, meetings and serves on internal /external committees as a representative of the Botanical Garden.
  • Works with the Director of Development to facilitate social donor events, which may involve occasional evening and weekend activities.
  • With the Development Director as the lead, this also to include some event planning and execution, guest rosters, emails, name tags, and thank you follow ups.
  • With the Director of Development as the point of initial contact facilitates and cultivates activities with the Advisory Board. This to include board rosters, bios, and other materials needed for the Boards quarterly meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of the location, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
  • Good written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.
  • Good organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Skills in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer and database systems, to facilitate research, extract meaningful data, and prepare documents and presentation materials.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in nonprofit fundraising, donor development, marketing and communications.
  • Knowledge of the UC Berkeley campus, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements, programs, and infrastructure.
  • Outstanding customer service ethics.
  • Desire and ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment with input from multiple stakeholders.
  • Highly detail oriented with a critical degree of accuracy.
  • Experience working with CADS, Salesforce, Blackbaud and/or similar database systems.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $33.57 – $44.58. This is equivalent to $70,094.16 – $93,083.04 annually.

  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
  • This is in-person position in a shared office setting with the possibility of occasional remote work at the discretion of the Director and Development Director
