Position Description:
The manager, Foundation & Government Grants for Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is part of a 15-person department responsible for raising over $7 million in annual operating support from a variety of sources. This position reports to the director of Institutional Funding & Assessment and, with a manager of corporate giving, works to raise approximately $2 million from foundations, corporations, and select government agencies through grants and sponsorship.
Responsibilities:
- Take the lead in developing and writing proposals and generating stewardship materials for foundation, corporate, and government grant makers.
- Steward and cultivate relationships with existing and prospective donors through discussion, correspondence, meetings, and tours.
- Develop deep knowledge of Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s programs and impact.
- Work closely with director, program staff, and finance staff to assess and develop new initiatives and assist in tracking program impact of funded initiatives.
- Oversee construction of accurate proposal budgets and monitor grant spending.
- Identify, research, and build a robust pipeline of prospective funding opportunities.
- Schedule and lead internal meetings with program and finance staff; establish and track internal review deadlines for proposals, reports, and other deliverables.
- Develop, schedule, and set logistics for engaging site visits for funding partners.
- Collaborate with Marketing department to develop materials that support grant-seeking efforts.
- Maintain up-to-date program statistics, gather attachments and signatures, and submit complete proposal packages.
- Manage calendar of submissions, acknowledgment, payments, reports, and renewals.
- Oversee gift processing, maintain accurate records and filing systems, update database and tracking documents, and write acknowledgment letters.
- Support Development staff by providing up-to-date information on programs, success stories, and new proposals and materials.
- Provide materials and support, as necessary, for institutional collaborations and special projects.
Relationships:
The manager is encouraged to develop an understanding of the entire organization and foster effective teamwork and communication with all staff members, particularly in Education, Public Programs, Finance, Facilities, Horticulture, and Development.
The candidate can expect to interact with foundation, corporation, and government agency staff, and Garden volunteers.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of three years of grant writing experience that includes independent proposal development
- Exceptional proposal writing skills, including ability to organize proposal components for maximum clarity, choosing words that advance understanding of proposed work, and contextualizing the impact of proposed work
- Ability to synthesize information and write in a clear, concise, and engaging tone
- Ability to self-direct and prioritize, with superior organizational skills and strong attention to detail
- Experience maintaining multiple projects and meeting deadlines
- Knowledge of outcome measurement and evaluation a plus
- Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends to support events during the Garden’s peak seasons
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience with fundraising software and project management systems; Raiser’s Edge and Asana a plus
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary Range – $64,000-$80,000
- Brooklyn Botanic Garden considers several factors when determining the appropriate salary to offer a candidate within the listed salary range. These factors include (but are not limited to), the scope and responsibilities of the position, a candidate’s relevant work experience and education/training, prior union/ DC37 experience (for union positions), job skills, equity across the institution, as well as market and organizational considerations.
