Job Title: Scientific Exhibits Assistant Curator 

Job Status: Full-time

Location: Virginia Beach, VA


The Virginia Aquarium is seeking an individual who enjoys project management and creative problem-solving to serve as Scientific Exhibits Assistant Curator and be part of the team that enhances, maintains, and develops interactive exhibits at the Virginia Aquarium. The ideal candidate will have the ability to draft construction plans based on conceptual drawings; identify appropriate materials for projects; guide Exhibits Technician I and II team members through construction and installation projects; code microcomputers; and stay abreast of trends in exhibit technology that may improve the Aquarium’s exhibit experience.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support the guest experience by enhancing interactive exhibits, audiovisual systems, and exhibit lighting.
  • Directly supervise Exhibit Technician I team members, which includes establishing work schedules, approving leave, and conducting performance reviews.
  • Ensure an effective team approach to handling tasks and projects that includes providing appropriate cross training and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure assigned staff, volunteers and interns comply with repair and maintenance protocols and safety requirements.
  • Lead projects that involve framing, finish carpentry, painting, 3D printing, computer repair, mechanical systems, lighting, and coding.
  • Maintain exhibits by conducting routine and emergency maintenance, and repair of exhibit components.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols when using hazardous materials and construction tools and equipment.
  • Assist senior curator with plans for developing new exhibits and updating existing exhibits.
  • Ensure compliance of all applicable Virginia Aquarium protocols, procedures, and accreditation standards.
  • Assist in developing, editing, and implementing section operating guidelines, such as repair and maintenance logs and shop safety.
  • Assist senior curator with developing budgets, procurement efforts, and purchasing by preparing specifications and evaluating products and vendors.
  • Operate forklifts and large trucks for exhibit needs.
  • Collaborate with the Facilities work unit to ensure Scientific Exhibits projects meet building codes.
  • Connect with the Association of Science & Technology Centers and similar organizations to network with professionals in the informal science field and keep up with industry trends.
