Salary: $70,000 – $80,000


Description

The Curator of Exhibitions is the central liaison among curators, and to all the other museum department ensuring the successful production, management, and marketing of all exhibition projects across campus, including curatorial oversight of the Mystic Seaport Village and historic ships. Ensuring that all required departments are both aware and able to contribute to the central exhibition objective. Reporting directly to the Director of Collections and Curatorial Affairs they will deliver with their team agreed exhibitions that are on time and on budget ensuring the highest of museum standards. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the exhibitions team.
  • Identify and include appropriate stakeholders in the production management of exhibition projects, managing the calendar and timelines appropriate to department requirements, such as marketing, visitor experience, and public programming alignments with projects. 
  • Research and approve exhibition scripts with curatorial staff.
  • Conduct artifact research to support exhibition development.
  • Deliver and manage a strategic plan in order to update village exhibitions as needed.
  •  Deliver and manage a strategic plan in order to update historic vessels as needed
  • Identify, hire, and manage subcontractors as needed, including guest curators, designers, 3D designers, fabricators, and conservators.
  • Manage all stages of the exhibition development process with the exhibitions team.
  • Collaborate closely with the curatorial team on the design, construction, installation, and maintenance of exhibitions. 
  • Maintain a three-to four-year schedule of upcoming exhibitions and display rotations.
  • Participate in public and educational programs that relate to exhibitions and the collections.
  • Participate in conferences and publications that promote mission and broaden audiences and outreach.
  • Other duties as required.

 

Requirements

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing museum exhibition projects.
  • Graduate degree in museum studies, history, public history, conservation, anthropology, or other relevant discipline, or equivalent on-the-job experience.
  • Strong research skills
  • Interest in and ability to identify and tell stories.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience working in 3D and graphic design
