The University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s School of Art and Design is looking for a Gallery Director to oversee the curation, administration, and public relations of the University’s Galleries.

 

Essential Functions:

 

The Gallery Director is responsible for: 

  • All aspects of exhibition development and installation for the University’s four galleries. 
  • Overseeing the daily operations of the galleries.
  • Developing and maintaining a two to four year exhibition schedule, showcasing a variety of relevant artists and craftspeople.
  • Planning, organizing, and executing receptions and special events.
  • Coordinating and supervising the work of the Assistant Gallery Director, Student Gallery Assistants, Work Studies students, and Interns.
  • Promoting and organizing community outreach of the gallery programs including scheduling group visits, initiating educational programs, and ensuring accessibility for patrons.
  • Producing educational and promotional materials.
  • Managing the collection, and overseeing donations and acquisitions.

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

 

The Gallery Director also needs to:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a respect for a wide range of identities and experiences.
  • Coordinate with School of Art and Design’s Faculty to ensure that the work exhibited in the galleries is relevant to coursework, allowing UA Little Rock students the benefit of working directly with original art and craft.
  • Participate in after-hours events such as exhibition openings, lectures, etc.
  • Maintain a safe working environment. 
  • Participate in all required training, including safety training and comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the University and the School of Art and Design.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, and database/collections management software.

 

Additional Qualifications

An ideal candidate will have the ability to build and foster relationships with artists and arts organizations on a local, national, and international level. They will also be a collaborative, collegial, and creative team player to advance the School of Art and Design’s programs and mission.

The Gallery Director should have experience working with diverse constituencies, including artists, collectors, donors, and the general public. They must have be able to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders to effectively meet objectives and competing deadlines. The Gallery director must have budget management skills, highly effective written and oral communication skills, and be able to work both independently and collaboratively. They will also demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in art history, museum studies, humanities, or a related field.
  • Leadership experience in the arts.
  • Experience teaching at the University level in order to contribute to the School or Art and Design’s curriculum by teaching one class per year on Museum Studies, Art History, or a related expertise. 

 

About the School of Art and Design Galleries and collections:

 

UA Little Rock’s School of Art and Design offers degrees in studio art, art history, and art education. We work to facilitate interdisciplinary practices fusing traditional craft and a focus on process, with a knowledge of contemporary art and theory. As an urban institution, UA Little Rock benefits from and works to serve the community. 

 

The School of Art and Design maintains three art galleries in the Windgate Center of Art and Design and one gallery in the Fine Arts Building. These showcase traveling, invitational, solo, group, and student  exhibitions throughout the year by both established and emerging artists. Student work is exhibited in the gallery spaces regularly for the Student Competitive and the senior exhibitions.

 

The primary gallery space, the Brad Cushman Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art + Design on Level 2, has just over 1,800 square feet of floor space. The Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery on Level 1 has 1,000 square feet of floor space. The Focus Gallery on Level 2 has 330 square feet of floor space. Gallery One, in the Fine Arts Building, has 2,500 feet of floor space. In addition to temporary exhibitions, the gallery program maintains the UA Little Rock Permanent Art Collection with over 1,800 works of art in a variety of media.
