Description
Position duties and responsibilities:
Reporting directly to the President of AAA in A, working collaboratively with the Manager of Operations and Development and the Programs and Collections coordinator, and the rest of AAA colleagues in New York, New Delhi and Hong Kong, as well as our community of individual and institutional friends and supporters, with generosity, integrity, curiosity, creativity, and respect, to ensure AAA in A offers the most relevant and highest quality programming, collections, and all other activities, in furtherance of AAA in A’s mission, with a primary focus as follows:
- Programs: conceive, develop, spearhead, and execute all aspects of AAA in A’s public programs, as well as closed-door workshops and seminars, in coordination with the President, Manager of Operations and Development and supported by the Program and Collection coordinator. Responsibilities include conceptualizing themes, obtaining internal consensus, coordinating with participants/contributors, collaborating with partner institutions, and managing all logistics up to and including the day of execution.The goal is to ensure the highest quality outcome, and creating and sharing accessible video or text documentation for public access. Programs include panels, talks, workshops, screenings, research residencies and occasional exhibitions.
- Collection: maintain and expand the AAA in A reading room collection by pursuing targeted acquisitions, processing material donations, cataloging recent acquisitions, shelving, and overseeing the general upkeep of both the physical collection and digital catalog. Also coordinate appointments for reading room users and manage on-site digital archive access. Design and conduct workshops centered around AAA’s collection for specific groups as well as the general public.
- Communications: develop and oversee communications for all AAA in A public programs and our collection resources via our website and social media accounts, including posting program announcements and follow-up documentation, maintaining our community event calendar, posting to our Instagram/Twitter/Facebook pages, and selecting and publishing monthly collection highlights.
- Fund-raising: in collaboration with the Manager of Operations and Development, support all program-related fund-raising activities, including grant writing and submission, researching new funding opportunities, as well as assisting with general fund-raising efforts, such as our annual fundraising event.
- Outreach: be a proud and positive representative of AAA in A, attend community cultural events, and actively help expand our network of friends, supporters and collaborators.
- Research: contribute to AAA in A research projects as necessary, including transcription, translation, video-editing, etc.
- Oversee the Program and Collection Coordinator and project interns, and support other administrative tasks as needed.
Qualifications:
- Abiding interest in and experience with contemporary art and Asia, and a desire to learn and achieve excellent results.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to be consistently gracious, diplomatic, and professional with all levels and location of staff, Board members, donors, visitors, audience members, speakers, and other counterparts and collaborators at organizations outside AAA.
- Project management, including experience overseeing and managing staff, including interns.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and quality of results; experience in cataloging or working with collections preferred.
- Ability to work under pressure, problem solve, multi-task, prioritize, set goals and meet them in a timely manner.
- A self-starter and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Fluent written and spoken English (Mandarin Chinese written and spoken fluency desirable, as well as familiarity with other Asian languages).
- Strong computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Adobe Creative Suite, and GSuite. Experience with Final Cut Pro, or other video-editing software, is a plus. Experience with Eventbrite and Mailchimp a plus, as well as Instagram and other forms of social media for outreach and promotion.
- Advanced degree in a related field preferred.
Requirements:
- Three days per week between Monday–Friday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.
- Must be eligible to work legally in the United States.
- Start date as soon as possible, ideally by early November.
About Asia Art Archive in America:
Asia Art Archive in America (AAA in A), founded in 2009, is an independently established and operated U.S. 501(c)3 and the first overseas hub of Asia Art Archive (AAA) in Hong Kong.
AAA’s mission is to act as a catalyst for new ideas that enrich our understanding of the world through the collection, creation, and sharing of knowledge around recent art in and of Asia. By collecting, preserving, and making accessible information on contemporary art from and of Asia, AAA in A facilitates public understanding and specialized research, instigates dialogue and critical thinking, and seeks to raise awareness of and support for the activities of Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong.
To achieve this goal, AAA in A maintains a reading room in Brooklyn Heights which is open to the public free of charge and comprises over 5000 monographs, exhibition catalogs, reference books, periodicals, and audio-visual materials. AAA in A also organizes a regular program of talks, screenings, workshops, participatory projects, and panels with artists, curators, critics, and scholars in the field.
