Description

Black Trustee Alliance for Art Museums (BTA) seeks a full-time Program Manager to support the growth and evolution of the organization’s membership and programming. The Program Manager is an integral member of BTA, providing an inspiring and supportive membership experience to BTA’s expansive network of Black trustees.  

The Program Manager will report to the Executive Director and work in close partnership with BTA’s Advisory Board, trustee members, and field peers.

The mission of Black Trustee Alliance is to transform art museums into more equitable and excellent spaces of cultural engagement by harnessing the power of Black trustees. We are a membership organization with over 130 Black trustees serving on the boards of art museums across North America.  We equip Black trustees with the knowledge, resources, and network to bring meaningful and lasting change to their institutions. Role Responsibilities:

  • Manage BTA’s digital member community of Black trustees. 
  • Proactively grow BTA’s membership base, through enhanced prospecting, recruitment, onboarding and retention.  
  • Guide the development of BTA’s programming and events strategy, including our flagship annual convening and year-round programming (including studio/gallery visits, member meet-and-greets, leadership lecture series, and more) that elevates the visibility of Black influence in the field. 
  • Plan and execute community-building experiences that champion new, strategic perspectives for Black trustees. 
  • Oversee programming from ideation, sourcing speakers, invitations, event execution, attendee feedback, and postmortems to reflect on learnings. 
  • Maintain an up-to-date programming and events calendar.   
  • Measure and track membership metrics, developing monthly membership reports that showcase membership performance over time.  
  • Develop a member communications strategy that engages our members on an ongoing basis. 
  • Foster programmatic partnerships with organizations in the field committed to racial equity. 
  • Keep a pulse to the latest issues in both the cultural field and the landscape of diversity, equity, and inclusion work, sharing insights with our members. 
  • Collaborate with consultants, vendors, and partners on special projects.  

A Typical Week in this Role Looks Like:

  • Conducting member prospecting, uncovering newly appointed Black trustees or existing Black trustees not yet in our network. 
  • Brainstorming ways to enhance BTA’s membership offer alongside the Executive Director. 
  • Emceeing a leadership speaker panel event over Zoom. 
  • Planning in-person programming for BTA’s member hub cities (i.e., New York, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles).    
  • Problem-solving a planning roadblock with a contracted event planner, and communicating potential paths forward.
  • Identifying ways to enhance the processes and tools for managing the member community. 
  • Interviewing and surveying members on their wants, needs, and desires for the future. 
  • Reading and synthesizing field news for BTA field briefing reports. 
  • Drafting member outreach and communications materials. 
  • 1-1 mentorship from the Executive Director to explore your professional growth and development.

Role Requirements

  • Exceptional community-building, communications, and planning skills.
  • 5+ years of full-time professional experience, with at least 1 year of direct experience leading an initiative or program.
  • You have substantial professional experience in, or an otherwise demonstrated commitment to, the field of arts and culture. 
  • Prior experience with programming design or event production is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Slides, Sheets, Docs) is a must. 
  • Knowledge of Mailchimp, Paperless Post, Airtable, and CRM tools is a plus.
  • Ability to travel domestically. 

Role Type

This is a full-time, US-based and fully remote position, with a November/December 2023 start date. Domestic travel is estimated at up to 20% of your time.
