Description

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Associate Educator, Civic Engagement that works as part of a team to advance the civic role of the institution by supporting the public in engaging with the museum as a civic space, as well as developing programs and projects that enable MoMA to promote quality of life in New York City. Central to this position is the understanding that Civic engagement – the active participation of people in the decision-making processes that shape their communities and their lives – is critical to a healthy and vibrant society, especially in how the arts can help catalyze a sense of criticality and agency for communities in New York City. The Associate Educator will also conceive and co-conceive, manage, and facilitate meaningful community-led programs that provide impactful experiences, attract new audiences, and engender critical conversations.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Conceives, co-develops, manages, and facilitates meaningful community-led programs that provide impactful experiences, attract new audiences, and engender critical conversations.
  • Identifies relationship-building opportunities and partnerships with the community in New York to maximize engagement locally, regionally, and statewide.
  • Infuses the goals, perspectives, and interests of communities into planning conversations, decision making, and institutional vision-setting.
  • Works with colleagues in the Public and Civic Engagement teams to effectively manage partnerships, memberships, passes, and reciprocal arrangements. Works with colleagues in L&E and curatorial departments to initiate, coordinate logistics for, and produce programs.
  • Develops projects with artists whose work is situated in and activated by the public realm. Positions the museum for the public and artists together, especially by using non-conventional programming spaces – both at the museum and out in the community – to engage audiences.
  • Guides program development and manages projects and efforts to ensure the integration of museum and community voices and efficient collaborative work practices.
  • In partnership with other arts, cultural, educational, non-profit, governmental, and civic organizations at the museum or off-site, builds innovative solutions especially for diverse, multilingual, multi-generational, and multicultural audiences in places such as libraries; hospitals and medical training facilities, health care and wellness centers, and mental health support organizations; judicial and other law agencies; military and veterans support organizations; and civic and governmental agencies connected to housing, parks, and recreation, and community gardens.
  •  Advances planning production for long-term artist projects, including research, production schedules, and contracts.
  •  Serves as liaison with external partners and departments across MoMA
  •  Gathers pertinent data, contributes to evaluation and report writing, and tracks expenses.
  •  Coordinates marketing efforts and writes and edits promotional content.
  •  Initiates, develops, and collaborates to deliver evaluations of projects for and with the public regularly to better understand and address community interests and goals and to make visible the Museum’s impact to staff, stakeholders, and communities, collects and archives key outputs, and measures key outcomes of community engagement activity.
  •  Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience in museum education, public engagement, or public programming.
  • Demonstrated experience in community capacity building, cultural development, civic engagement.
  • Experience coordinating events for adult audiences and incorporating feedback into program design.
  • Experience evaluating programs for impact.
  • Facility with public presentation and convening diverse public groups.
  • Strong cultural competencies and consciousness of cultural identities and differences.
  • Experience managing project and program budgets.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, negotiation and team-building skills to establish and maintain good working relationships with a wide variety of individuals and groups, with an emphasis on tact, diplomacy, flexibility, and professionalism.
  • Exceptional time-management and personal organization skills.
  • Proactive communicator with excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Bilingual Spanish (preferred).

Salary: The salary for this position is $79,435.
