Description
The Director of Foundation and Government Giving (DFGG) plays a pivotal role in the success of FAMSF by serving as the primary relationship manager of the entire foundation and government funder portfolio. In alignment with documented, strategic organizational priorities, and in close partnership with the CEO, CPO, and other key program leaders, the DFGG is responsible for all facets of the foundation and government giving program including research, letter of inquiry, proposal submission, site-visit(s), acknowledgment/receipting, recognition, stewardship, and timely and thorough reporting on all foundation and government grants. Responsible for an annual fundraising goal in excess of $2.75M+, the DFGG is a key leader on the Development team and collaborates across the museums to create complete and compelling funding proposals. The DFGG supervises the Senior Grants Manager.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
- Regularly monitors and actively pursues funding opportunities.
- By leveraging opportunities to learn and collaborate across departments, the DFGG produces compelling, complete, and persuasive narratives and proposals for all national foundation and government funders.
- Through proactive, timely, and regular communication with both funders and key staff, the DFGG manages deadlines to ensure on-time submissions.
- Thoroughly documents and tracks all activities, research, and information related to funder relations, submissions, and recognition in Salesforce, ensuring 100% compliance with donor intent and adherence to all deadlines and grant agreements.
- Creates and adheres to procedures and strategies to strengthen foundation relationships, including through systems, operations, financial management, and reporting.
- By seeking professional development opportunities and engaging with peer communities of practice, the DFGG remains current on evolving industry trends and language.
- Collaborates with executive leadership and colleagues in other departments to prepare project narratives, budgets, and supplemental materials for compelling and persuasive grant proposals and reports.
- Cultivates and stewards prospects and donors through exemplary written and verbal correspondence, event invitation and attendance, recognition, reporting, and other regular contact.
- Regularly attends relevant museum events and serve as an ambassador for FAMSF at external events.
Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s Degree
Work Experience: A minimum of five years of experience with successful grant writing, budgeting, program and financial reporting, pipeline management, and forecasting for organizations with operating budgets of $20 million+.

- Ability to understand and effectively articulate the mission and future plans of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in successful grant proposals.
- Understands organizational structure and works through administrative systems to interact effectively with museum staff at all levels on the design of compelling and timely funding proposals.
- Strong time-management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail and a strict adherence to deadlines.
- Asks questions and takes initiative to facilitate work being completed in adherence with deadlines.
- High level of tact, diplomacy, and discretion in handling and securing confidential donor and financial information.
- Strategic research and prospecting abilities.
- High-level analytical, problem solving, and presentation skills.
- Approaches work with an open-mind and growth mindset and is flexible, nimble, and entrepreneurial in an evolving philanthropic landscape.
- Comfort in proactive outreach and responsive interpersonal engagement.
- Comprehensive knowledge of grant writing, fundraising principles, techniques, and ethics.
- Experience with Bay Area foundations and governmental agencies strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in MS Office, Google workspace, Salesforce CRM.
- Ability to work nights and weekends as needed to attend relevant events and meet proposal deadlines.
- Interest in and knowledge of fine art and art history preferred.

The annual salary range for this position is $95,000-110,000. The final offer amount within this range will be based on experience and internal equity.
