THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Park District is recruiting for an Exhibit Supervisor in the Creative Design Group. This position is located at 5653 Stoneridge Drive, Suite 120, Pleasanton, CA 94588. The hiring pools established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancies and additional vacancies that may occur during the one-year life of the hiring pools.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:
This position reports to the Chief, manager, or designee and supervises technical and support staff, and/or volunteers. Under general direction, supervises and coordinates the planning, design, fabrication, installation and maintenance of visitor center exhibits, interpretive panels, and publications relating to District parks and used in interpreting historical and natural features of the East Bay Regional Park District; and performs related duties as assigned.
As a working Supervisor, you will be directly responsible for improving the park visitor experience by leading a team of Exhibit Designers to create, improve, and maintain visitor center exhibits, over 400 wayside interpretive panels, and a variety of interpretive brochures throughout a growing system of 73 parks and 10 visitor center locations. You will cultivate an environment of inclusion, collaboration, curiosity, quality, and efficiency within the Exhibits and Creative Design groups, across District departments, and extending to outside vendors and other project contributors. Day to day, you will coordinate with District Interpretive staff on exhibit goals and content, be involved in the planning of construction or renovation projects with interpretive components, stay abreast of developments within the exhibit field, mentor staff to continuously raise their level of skill and perspective, prioritize and assign work in line with cross-departmental goals and objectives, and work side by side with your staff in the shop and in the field to build and install exhibits to a museum-quality standard.
IDEAL CANDIDATE:
- Has experience with fabrication & hands-on exhibits.
- Well-versed in the latest trends and technologies in Exhibit Design.
- Has experience supervising technical staff and support staff.
- Is self-directed and able to manage several projects concurrently and move them forward to completion.
- Has strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to exercise initiative, tact, and independent judgment.
- Has experience in woodshop, welding, glass, and hands-on material work.
- Has experience with Adobe Creative Suite, 3D, and CAD experience.
Essential Functions
- Coordinates with other District Departments, and participates in all stages of the planning, design, text editing, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of exhibits, waysides, visitor centers, interpretive panels and publications.
- Consults with other District Departments on District interpretive projects and visitor centers.
- Structures work flow, develops and administers work schedules and standards, staff training, performance evaluations, and safety meetings.
- Monitors the budget for Exhibit Design projects and capital projects involving visitor center remodels.
- Oversees and works to resolve exhibit maintenance issues.
- Manage external design consultants and fabricators.
- Writes, negotiates and monitors contracts with outside vendors.
- Researches, selects, purchases, installs and maintains equipment, tools and materials for visitor centers, exhibits, interpretive panels, and publications.
- Purchases, installs, trouble shoots, maintains and instructs staff on computer systems and appropriate software.
- Takes and edits photographs and video for Exhibit Design use and for use by other District departments.
- Operates a wide variety of hand and power tools.
- Maintains records and writes reports and other correspondence.
- Oversees building security and shop safety.
- Supervises, trains, develops, and evaluates staff.
OTHER FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
- Stays abreast of technology and new developments in the exhibit field; performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in graphic design, art, natural science, natural resource interpretation, or a related field, ANDExperience: Two years of experience in the East Bay Regional Park District classification of Exhibit Designer,ORFour years of experience in the planning, design, fabrication and installation of natural science museums and aquarium or park visitor exhibits, including one year of supervisory experience in this field.
License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License is a condition of initial and continued employment.

- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to internal staff and external customers.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- All East Bay Park Regional District employees are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
- Must be able to pass a Level 1 background check which includes: employment history verification, employee reference check, education or certificate verification, Department of Justice fingerprinting, and criminal history review.
- Must wear a Park District Uniform.
- May be required to attend public hearings and other meetings which may be scheduled outside of normal work hours.
- Depending on work location and assignment, ability to use a respirator in the performance of work. In accordance with CAL OSHA respirator regulations, Title 8, 5144 (c) (g) (l) (A) (l.), incumbent shall not wear facial hair (e.g. beards, long sideburns, etc.) that impedes the effectiveness of the respirator.
UNION AFFILIATION:
AFSCME: East Bay Regional Parks Employees, Local 2428, American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO, represents this classification. Wages, hours, and other terms of conditions of employment are covered in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Park District and Local 2428. The probationary period for this classification is nine (9) months.
SALARY RANGE: The starting pay for this position will be at Step A of the salary range.
