OVERVIEW

Founded in 2021, Museums Moving Forward (“MMF”) is an independent, collaborative organization devoted to envisioning and creating a more just museum sector by 2030. As the steward of a diverse network of museums, cultural workers, and philanthropists across the U.S., MMF drives urgent conversations about the most effective ways to make and measure real change inside museum workplaces. Through data, discourse, and professional development, MMF is committed to the evolution of museums by improving the working conditions and lives of cultural workers.

The Publications & Events Manager will join MMF at a foundational moment in the history of the organization, currently led by Director and Co-Founder Mia Locks, and an inaugural Board of Stakeholders, comprising other curators, educators, and museum program staff. Working in close partnership with the Director and Co-Founder, the Publications & Events Manager will be an essential partner who grows MMF’s capacity to engage and learn from cultural workers across the country through the management of live and online public programs and corresponding publications, including (but not exclusive to) a biannual Data Study & Report, Stakeholder Convenings, event documentation (online and in-person), best-practice guides, and commissioned articles, among others.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Publications & Events Manager will advance the mission of MMF by working closely and collaboratively with the Director and Co-Founder and with a growing staff, guest writers, publishing partners, advisors, and volunteers.

PRINCIPAL OPPORTUNITIES

The Publications & Events Manager role was designed to accommodate an individual with a desire to build their knowledge of event production, digital publishing, and the broader movement toward equity within the museum sector.

  • Play a leading role in communications, programming, and the overall growth of MMF at this foundational moment. 
  • Work closely with the Director and Co-Founder to build and sustain long-term relationships with stakeholders across MMF’s nationwide community. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

In particular, the Publications & Events Manager will:

  • Manage the workflow, development, and presentation of all digital publishing and live/online programs, with special consideration for the relationship between the two formats;
  • With the Director and Co-Founder, facilitate the engagement and timely contributions of invited contributors, including writers, researchers, and speakers;
  • Liaise with partnering publishers and program venues including museums, fairs, conferences, magazines, journals, and podcasts, among other platforms;
  • Draft and maintain an annual calendar and budget to guide these activities;
  • Draft and manage all related communications material including invitations, event announcements, documentation, and related collateral;
  • Play a crucial role in MMF’s broader community by nurturing positive relationships with the Board of Stakeholders, cultural workers, museum leaders, patrons, artists, and volunteers, among others working in the museum sector;
  • Manage the scheduling of meetings, select correspondence, and external inquiries.

 

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITIES

The ideal candidate for the Publications & Events Manager position:

  • Possesses the capacity and desire to learn and knowledgeably engage with MMF’s mission and its community of cultural workers, and is able to translate this commitment into reliable daily work;
  • A cultural worker with experience working in the nonprofit sector, and the enthusiasm to deepen their knowledge of event production, management, and publishing across multiple formats;  
  • Excited by the unique challenges that come with supporting an emerging organization during a pivotal moment of growth;  
  • A proficient writer and editor, able to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders;
  • Thoughtful yet decisive in their planning and management of all work;
  • Able to effectively manage multiple projects and deadlines;
  • Willing to occasionally travel throughout the U.S. to produce live events;
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Zoom, and other platforms.

The Publications & Events Manager role involves remaining in a stationary position some of the time in front of a computer, using a keyboard, mouse, phone, and other office equipment; and moving about event sites of varying layouts.

TERMS OF THE POSITION

The Publications & Events Manager position is a full-time remote role (approx. 40 hours/week), with occasional evening commitments. Compensation includes a salary of $60,000 plus benefits, including healthcare, vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays, following a three-month trial period. They will be willing to work remotely most days of the week, consistently communicating and coordinating with MMF’s broader team and occasionally traveling within the U.S.
