JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Major Gifts works closely with the Senior Vice President for Development, the President and CEO, the Board Chair, the Chair of the Chairman’s Council, and other Board and staff leadership to steward, renew, and recruit Chairman’s Council members and other donors at the level of $25,000 and higher. While applying their exceptional skills in prospect cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, the Director of Major Gifts will help New-York Historical achieve short and long-term fundraising goals.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Work with the Chairman’s Council Chair to steward the Chairman’s Council through strategic and creative communications, engagement opportunities, private events, and other activities;
- Work with the Chairman’s Council Chair and other trustees and staff colleagues to recruit new Chairman’s Council members and renew current ones;
- Maintain a portfolio of 100 to 150 Chairman’s Council members and prospects for whom this person will be responsible for new memberships, renewals, upgrades, additional gifts, and referrals for prospective new Chairman’s Council members;
- Work with the President & CEO, Board Chair, Development Committee of the Board, and the Board of Trustees to develop and implement strategies for the research, cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation of donors and prospects to grow engagement and contributed revenue;
- In collaboration with the Director of Individual Giving, the Director of Special Events, and other colleagues, conceive of cultivation events and other opportunities to engage prospective major donors and build relationships with them, including but not limited to Chairman’s Council-focused events such as “Dinners with History” and similar small-scale, high touch events;
- Work with New-York Historical Curatorial, Education, and other staff to align major gifts fundraising efforts with programmatic priorities, and meaningfully include programmatic staff in development activities, as appropriate;
- Provide support for the annual Weekend with History events in New York and Palm Beach;
- Responsible for tracking and reporting of Chairman’s Council benefits and goals;
- Ensure that Chairman’s Council page on New-York Historical’s website is current (membership benefits, images, etc.)
- Additional duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum of 12 years progressive experience working in non-profit fundraising;
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent;
- Diplomacy, tact, and the ability to skillfully handle donor situations;
- Proven ability in soliciting, cultivating, and stewarding of major gifts, including personal solicitations;
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;
- Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments in a fast-paced, deadline-driven fundraising environment;
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, and to travel when needed;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and PowerPoint, and Google Suite required; Experience with Altru and/or Raiser’s Edge preferred
- A self-motivated individual with a desire to learn;
- An enthusiasm for museum development work, humanities, and the arts, and a desire to take on challenges.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
At times, this is a sedentary role using a computer; however, some filing or shelving is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stoop as necessary. The ability to lead tours through the museum is also required.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The expected salary range for this position is $115,000 – $125,000. The successful candidate will be offered a salary within this range based on specific factors such as their individual qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.
