Job Description

About The Role

The Huntington is pleased to host the 2023 Cactus and Succulent Society of America Desert Collections Internship. This internship will focus on the Desert Collections, with an emphasis on planting the rockeries in the upper Desert Garden surrounding the newly Desert Garden Conservatory. The Desert Collections are among the best documented Living Collections at The Huntington and this opportunity is a great opportunity to spend time with this collection. The intern will report to the Plant Collections and Conservation Manager but will work under the direct supervision of the Curator of Desert Collections.The position will work no more than 32 hours per week and have a duration between 6-8 weeks, with a flexible start date, preferably in June.

Essential Duties

  • Assists Curator of Desert Collections and Head Gardener of Desert Garden, under direct supervision, by watering, grooming, mulching, and replanting the rockeries in the upper Desert Garden construction zone.
  • Assists Curator of Desert Collections or Succulent Plant Propagator by transplanting, grooming, fertilizing, and weeding in the Desert Collections Nurseries.
  • Must adhere to written safety policy, following all precautions and directions in use of equipment and chemicals.
  • Must complete a one-page final report and give a brief presentation to the CSSA Board of Directors at the conclusion of the internship.

Other Duties

  • May be asked to assist with inventory or data entry related to the Desert Collections.
  • May be asked to perform duties in other areas of the Huntington Botanical Gardens as needed.

Candidate Qualifications And Experience

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a college-level program studying Horticulture, Plant Science, Landscape Design, or related field.
  • Must be able to work independently without constant supervision.
  • Knowledge of cacti and succulents a plus.

Experience

  • Experience working with plants is essential. Experience with horticulture and plant propagation preferred.

Working Conditions

Work will be primarily outdoors, split between the Desert Collections Nursery and the Desert Garden. Garden work will require awareness and avoidance of potential hazards inherent in a public garden.
